Application of Number (FETAC Level 3)

This course is an empowerment-training course, which is suitable for individuals who want to make positive changes in their lives by increasing their awareness and understanding of numeracy issues that they would encounter in everyday life. The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use the personal resources at their disposal in order to meet the personal and social demands of the learning and working or community environments in the areas of numeracy.

  • To provide clarity around the different kinds of numbers such fractions, percentages, decimals, natural, integer and real numbers that people are exposed to every day.
  • To create an awareness of the functions of a calculator and to develop competency in using a calculator
  • To consider the concept of shape and space and practically apply these concepts to solving mathematical problems relating to area and volume.
  • To facilitate the learner to develop spatial understanding and skills through the use of scaled drawings to calculate real distances and measurements and to facilitate the learner to draw common items to an appropriate scale.
Course Content:

Unit 1: The Number

  • Understand the difference between Natural Numbers (N), Integers (Z) and Real (R) Numbers.
  • Be able to differentiate between the various mathematical operators and determine the correct order of operation using BOMDAS
  • The importance of sequencing numbers
  • Demonstrate an ability to understand and work with fractions, decimals and percentages and to be able to convert figures between decimals, percentages and fractions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with a calculator, examining everyday situations where the learner may be required to use a calculator
  • Use significant numbers to aid in approximating figures.

Unit 2: Measurement and Capacity – Shape and Space

  • Explore the key characteristics of commonly encountered shapes, including length of sides, size of angles, dimensionality
  • Explore the concept of area of a square, rectangle, triangle, circle and cylinder.  Enable the learner to calculate the area of each of these shapes.  Apply these calculations to everyday situations.
  • How area is represented through units of measurement
  • Explore the concept of Volume.  Enable the learner to calculate the area of a cylinder.  Apply these calculations to everyday situations such as measuring the contents of an oil tank.
  • How volume is represented through units of measurement

Unit 3: Measurement and Capacity – Scaled Drawings

  • Understand the concept of drawing objects to scale, for example, house plans, maps, diagrams for assembling furniture and other everyday situations.
  • Become familiar with the various tools that are needed to draw an object to scale, including a scale rule, compass, protractor and set square.
  • Consider appropriate scales that may be used depending on the object being focused on.
  • Enable the learner to draw a variety of everyday objects to scale using the mathematical instruments mentioned.
  • Use a scaled map to explore real locations and directions and compare the learner calculations against actual distances.

Unit 5: Practical Application of Numerical and Measurement Skills

  • Enable the learner to solve real life quantitative problems such as comparing prices between various shops, comparing financial products, determining value for money based on special offers often provided by shops.
  • Explore with the learner some realistic applications of measuring things and using the information for a practical application such as determining distances of journeys, determining the volume of a home oil tank, calculate the amount of paint that would be required to paint a room given specific dimensions.
