Occupational First Aid (FETAC 5)

This comprehensive 3 day course covers all the essential aspects of Occupational First Aid. This course will provide the learner with the knowledge and practical skills to give effective life support diagnosis and treat injuries or illness and maintain care and comfort of the casualty. Participants will also gain the understanding required to provide and co-ordinate first aid in the workplace in compliance with the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (general application) Regulation 2007

- Be able to provide treatment for the purpose of providing life or minimizing the consequences of injury until discharge or arrival of medical assistance.

Course Content:
- First Aid in the workplace – the role of the occupational first aider, the legal requirements and how to effectively ensure the safety of the first aider in the work place
- Patient Assessment – learners will be able to do a primary survey on a potential casualty and know how to take vitals (pulse, breathing, etc) signs and treat a casualty with a suspected neck injury.
- Respiratory Emergencies – understand the functions of the respiratory system and show the occupational First Aider how to manage a choking patient as well how to do mouth to mouth ventilations.
- Cardiac first response – student will understand the chain of survival and will be able to activate their links, by calling for an ambulance, starting CPR and using a Defibrillator effectively.
- Wounds and Bleeding – student learn how to deal with blood injuries. They will be able to deal with head, eye and facial injuries as well as effectively minimizing the consequences of internal bleeding.
- Altered levels of consciousness – students learn how to treat shock and how to do the recovery position.
- Musculosketal injuries – students will be able to treat patients who have fractured (broken) bones as well as deal effectively with casualties who have sprains, strains and dislocations.
- Burns and scalds, chemicals, electric shock – this module covers the treatment of major and minor burns as well as the many different causes of burns. It also covers poisoning and how to treat someone who has been poised. The student will cover electrical shock and how to manage a patient who has been electrocuted
Accreditation
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a Fetac Level 5 Certificate in Occupational 1st Aid

Manual Handling (CPD)

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, it is the duty of an employer to ensure no employee is put at risk while manually handling a load. Under the act it is a requirement that employees are trained in how to safely handle loads without mechanical assistance. The Manual Handling course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge to conduct all manual handling activities in a manner that will prevent injury. The course deals with informing participants on the consequences of lifting incorrectly, the philosophy being that if persons understand the consequences of incorrect lifting they will pay more attention to lifting correctly.
